As a young man Phil Stong, author of Honk: The Moose, taught high school in Biwabik, Minnesota, a town in an area of northeastern Minnesota called the Mesabi Iron Range. He was fascinated by the ethnic groups in town and chose to portray Finnish immigrants in this book for children. His most famous work was published in 1932 – State Fair, later a hit movie by Rogers and Hammerstein. |
